Communities::Modelling

To move from conception through design to implementation, a model needs to be created that includes the time dimension. Either this model needs to be contained in the mind of the creator and communicated effectively throughout the design to implementation phase, or those who implement design enhancments and fine tuning are skilled at this or there is a step by step model that can be followed to enable the actors to carry out their parts so that the design can be implemented effectively.

In other words, a narrative needs to be created--much as in a movie--that the actors need to understand, rehearse and then play out, so that the entire system can run effectively. From a systems design perspective, carrying out tasks essential for system functions leaves room for personal creativity only as it meets the need for the system. Although this idea may be met with some resistance, this requirement extends back to the creator of the design. It is one reason it is open sourced.

To put this in perspective, a system design needs to work according to specifications. The law of non-contradiction states that a thing cannot be both A and non-A at the same time. That is, a workshop assigned for the cutting and assembly of wood cannot be used for the cutting and assembly of materials to be used for clothing. The sawdust will get into the materials and the equipment needed is different.

Thus, a system needs to be constructed according to its design. If a person or a group of people do not think the design is adequate to suit their purposes, then they are free to create another design, but at a different location, and one that does not interfere with the original design. This puts the weight of the responsiblity on the original design and the modelling of it, so that it can be determined beforehand how well it will play out.

Finally, the modelling should not be constructed to a hard, physical deadline, at least when tested virtually. If this happens, then any ingredient essential to project completion which is not present could throw the entire design out of kilter. Rather, the purpose of virtual modelling is to visualize the movement of people, products and processes through time, so that the participants can view this model, picture themselves in it, and therefore carry out their parts with a much higher probability of success.

An example of the distinction between playing out one's role and the effort needed to create that role is behind-the-scenes footage for a movie such as this:

This mix of actual and behind the scenes footage creates a suspense and an energy that cannot be captured otherwise. There is an overall script, with variations within the theme that are created as the actors work together. In the same way, as a community is built out, it can be seen that the same blend of overall direction, precise technical skill and personal creativity needs to be present. This demonstrates that those with a high level of ability and experience are needed, with an intense personal communitment, to play out their roles in real life that results in a long term, integrated, sustainable system.
