Cute Raccoon. Name unknown The above map and data depict two cities in eastern Ontario. The grey zone in the center shows the total calculated area of the city. The darker green around the grey calculates the area from which the city could potentially gain most of it's resources (in contrast to an undefined area which equals the entire globe) and the lighter green around the darker green is an "overflow" area in which it is less likely or less desirable to obtain resources for the contained city. Of course, those in the areas surrounding a city may want to obtain supplies from that city, from a neighbouring city, or elsewhere. The circle is used for simplicity.

Representing the Non-Human Population

The raccoon is chosen as a representative of the non-human population. Standard maps are geared for standard human expectations. The word "population" is automatically assumend to mean human population. In the design of an integrated community, one of the potential tasks could be that of monitoring: surveying and mapping wildlife, vegetation, insects, plants to help ensure a diverse, healthy ecosystem is maintained. This should help not only these species, but should also feed in a positive loop back to the humans who are looking after them.

Data

The data for this map and the list beneath it is stored in XML format. This format is very much like the HTML that is used to serve this page. XML is easy to create and can be edited with a standard text editor, such as Notepad++ (free). This means that almost anyone can collect data and store it in XML format. A short script can then take that data, process it, and display it in list or map form, as shown here.
